TRANSFORMATION OF JURONG
Jurong Innovation District

SINGAPORE - A new Jurong Innovation District (JID), envisioned as the industrial park of the future, will be built as part of the Government's push to encourage more innovation.

The first phase of the district, which will be in Jurong West, is expected to be completed by around 2022.

Singapore's earlier industrial estates were developed for specific industries focused mostly on production, said Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat during his Budget speech on Thursday (March 24).

But nowadays, research, innovation and production are closely intertwined, he pointed out.

The district will bring together researchers, students, innovators and businesses to develop products and services of the future. It will also create an environment to house different activities within a single next-generation industrial district.
It will be the future of innovation for enterprise, learning and living, Mr Heng added.

"Fifty years ago, we transformed Jurong from swampland into a thriving hub for the manufacturing industry that powered Singapore's economic growth. Now, we will take another leap to create the industrial park of the future," he said.
"This has the potential to transform how we live, work, play, learn and create."
Jurong Lake District

New homes, jobs, lifestyle in Jurong Lake District

Draft masterplan envisions 100,000 jobs and 20,000 new homes, and car-lite zones

Now known more for its industrial estates and HDB homes, the Jurong Lake District is gearing up for its reincarnation as Singapore's second Central Business District - a development the Government hopes can kick-start the country's next phase of economic transformation.

While the financial heart of the country is in the CBD south of the Singapore River, its ambition is for Jurong to become a second nucleus, anchored by sectors such as maritime services, energy and IT.

They could yield some 100,000 new jobs, due to the district's proximity to the upcoming High Speed Rail (HSR) terminus and Tuas mega-port, based on a draft masterplan the Urban Redevelopment Authority made public yesterday.

National Development Minister Lawrence Wong said: "It can be the catalyst for Singapore's next phase of economic transformation, in the same way that Jurong Industrial Estate kick-started our manufacturing sector more than 50 years ago."

There are also plans to build 20,000 new homes. It is not clear yet what the mix between public and private homes will be.

The planners want to introduce new ways of living and getting around. For instance, the district will be as car-lite as possible, with public transport-only zones, limited parking and a logistics hub outside it to minimise the number of delivery trucks in the area.
Jurong Region Line

The Jurong Region Line will be the seventh line to be introduced into the MRT system. The line is designed to be a medium capacity line.
It will be a fully automated and driverless elevated rapid transit line. When completed, it will span about 20km with around 30 stations. The line will be opening in two stages, in 2025 and 2026.
It will serve residents of Choa Chu Kang, Boon Lay and the future developments in the Tengah area, and connect high-activity areas in Jurong West, such as Nanyang Technological University, the Jurong Industrial estate, including Jurong Island and the future Jurong Gateway.
A West Coast Extension to connect to the Circle Line is currently under study. If it is found feasible, the extension of about 5km will be completed by 2030.
